SAP, a business software giant, is updating its cloud platform to make it compatible with other public clouds. This includes Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The SAP Cloud Platform can now run on AWS, the company announced at its annual Sapphire Now conference, Orlando, Fla.
SAP is also testing support Microsoft Azure via a public program and plans to add Google Cloud Platform to its list of supported platforms “soon,” according Bjoern Görke, chief technology officer at SAP.
Goerke stated that the SAP Cloud Platform, which is built on Cloud Foundry, is “the first and only end to-end digital enterprise platform that allows you to choose the infrastructure provider of choice.”
He said, “Regardless which IaaS provider(s), it can all be managed and operated through a single, unified cockpit.”
AWS, an exhibitor at this conference, also announced new initiatives together with SAP aimed towards customers in the life sciences field. These workloads, which are focused on processing large amounts of biological and personal data, are subject to a myriad of compliance and regulatory rules.
Christopher Chen, global strategy technology alliances leader for AWS’ Health Care and Life Sciences units, described the benefits of the initiatives as mutually beneficial. Chen wrote in a blog post that SAP has been a leader in providing solutions for the Life Sciences market over 45 years. Many of our customers and APN Partners are moving to AWS HANA workloads. Life Sciences customers work in highly regulated environments. We collaborate with SAP to help them run their businesses better by providing new tools that enable this transition.
AWS stated that it is preparing documentation to deploy SAP HANA workloads on AWS in order to ensure compliance with industry standards. AWS will also launch a “rapid migration program” to assist life sciences customers in moving their workloads to SAP HANA or the AWS cloud.
Chen stated that the goal of SAP’s cloud-enabled innovations is to enable and accelerate digital transformation for Life Sciences customers. Customers can use the tools and resources offered by SAP and AWS to help them meet their compliance goals with increased speed, agility, and support mission-critical applications such as SAP S/4HANA or SAP BW/4HANA.
